Each one of us is born with the capacity within us to
manifest the gifts and talents intrinsic to our nature and realize
deep fulfillment. Yet in our externally goal-oriented society it is easy
to lose our connection to Source and to Self. True yoga is about
self-revelation from gross to subtle, from skin to soul... Knowing
that our most inspired purpose lies deep within us and is
embedded in our Vital Force, Yoga invites us to dive in and
cultivate, again and again, the tools necessary to tap into the
depth of our body, mind and heart to restore our innermost power
and weave together a more meaningful, vibrant and fulfilling life.
This three-month Immersion is such an Invitation – to dive in
deep and actively engage in the process of carving out and
refocusing our choices from within. The physical practice of
Yoga, including Outer-Form and Inner-Form, will be greatly
refined, deepened, and masterly woven to pierce through the
body/mind layers (koshas) and awaken all areas of our life and
psyche. That's what all the talk about "alignment" boils down to:
while we focus on rearranging the physical body on the mat
through skilfull, sensible yoga practice, the physical shifts imprint
themselves deep into our nervous system and repattern the
underlying energetics that rule our actions (samskaras). As our bodies become more aligned and pulse more
in synch with Nature so do our lives, resulting in more ease, more courage and more grace. (even in
full-arm balance!)
Designed to advance all avid yoga students, including current instructors and aspiring teachers, far
beyond the domain of public classes and unlike a conventional "Teacher Training," this is a master
Course that focuses on you. Over the years this Intensive has proven to serve as a powerful vehicle for both
consummate learning and personal transformation. The underlying strength of the program lies in the
continuity of in-depth weekly classes within a closed group for three-months. This format creates a powerful
vessel which encourages and supports each student to grow at their own pace while riding the group energy and
integrating the changes that take place as the practice deepens. The fundamental strength of the training rests in
Maritza's dedicated presence and inspiring ability to share her knowledge creatively and impart prolific teachings
in a clear, intimate and transformative way.
The class work will be implemented with home-practice assignments, some required reading and journal writing.
We will be using a comprehensive Anusara Yoga Manual as a foundational textbook along with additional
hand-outs. A recommended reading list will also be provided upon acceptance.
Now in it's seventh year -and always evolving- this yearly Immersion comes highly recommended (and is quite
frequently repeated) by previous participants. Space is limited to 25 students. Registration and acceptance is
done through application --available on-line or at the front desk.

had to do and began..." – Mary Oliver
Asana Study,
In-Depth Practicum
Saturdays 1:00 - 5:30pm
Combining in-depth Asana practice with
systematic study/exploration on the mat and
intervals for discussion, our class work will
uncover and detail the Physical, Energetic and
Spiritual Principles that form the foundation of
a vibrant Yoga Practice. Students will be
guided week-by-week into a methodical
learning of body/mind skills through a full
spectrum of Yoga postures progressing from
basic to intermediate and more advanced.
Reflecting Maritza's deep roots in both Iyengar
and Anusara Yoga, this part of the training is a
dynamic, fluid integration of both methods
resulting in a profound, insightful approach that
looks into the group's blind spots and
limitations and reflects back ingenious
exercises and skillful means to breakdown
postures and impart brilliant Principles.
Cultivating and integrating these Principles in
practice is like inserting a master key into the
body's own intelligence and strength. It results
in visible physical and energetic transformation
which unfold at individual pace over the course
duration.
Topics will include:
- Biomechanical Principles of Alignment detailed in all foundational postures.
- Traditional and inspired warm-up sequences.
- Asana breakdown with modifications and inventive use of props.
- Seeing and understanding bodies --knowing yours.
- Partner work with hands-on assist.
- Cultivating simple anatomical intelligence in practice.
- Yoga Therapeutics: how to work with, heal and prevent injuries.
- Tailoring a home-practice creatively.
- Intuition and the Inner-teacher.
The Inner Form
Restoring Power in the Belly
and Trust in the Psyche
Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:30pm
Balancing and complementing "Solar" asana
work with "Lunar" internal work, this vital
section of the training will take you into
uncharted territory to explore your subtle
Energy-body and will unveil knots and binding
lodged beneath surface musculature and
conscious awareness. Using years of passionate
inner-exploration in this fascinating field
and informed by personal studies with master
teachers from various traditions, along with
personal insight from decades of intensive
Meditation, Maritza progressively and compassionately
guides students into the journey of
awakening, releasing and strengthening the
body's internal core to arouse dormant
creative force (Shakti), restore Agni (inner-fire)
and reclaim the body's intuition ("gut-feeling")
by interweaving the following practices:
- Reclining and sitting Pranayama.
- Deep abdomino-pelvic awareness and cultivation.
- Detailed, progressive teaching of the three Bandhas, Agni Sara and Nauli Kriya.
- Somatic relaxation/Yoga Nidra.
- Guided explorations of Koshas, Sushumna, Chakras.
- Insight Meditation.

"This has been a phenomenal life-changing experience that I feel
very grateful for and don't want to lose sight of..." –Leanne L., CEO
"Wow! This training opened up a whole new dimension of yoga for
me experientially, in my practice and in my life...thank you!"
–Danielle G., yoga teacher
"This course so much exceeded my expectations that I may not have
believed it was possible to learn and receive everything we were
given in this time frame had it been promised." –Jill R., entrepreneur
"Learning the Anusara Principles has been enormously helpful to
my practice, but it was your teaching, your extensive knowledge and
experience, your keen eye, and your exceptional ability to articulate
yoga in all its forms that provided me with a catalyst for change."
–Paige T., yoga Teacher
"My practice has slowed. I have gone deeper. My shoulders have
never been so open. I feel the same about my hips and my low back.
I am more aware of my body, more aware of how to work with my
body so that I am not straining. My teaching has become more
dynamic and confident as I have deepened my home practice
studying with you." –Pete C., yoga teacher
"Now that I am teaching, I am constantly reminded how much what I
know comes directly from you. You have been and continue to be
such an inspiration." –Carolyn H., psychotherapist and yoga teacher
"Every time I practice, I feel gratitude for the time I spent in your
training. My understanding of the asanas, of my body, and of the
practice of yoga have deepened to such a degree...you have a great
deal to give and you give it generously. Thank you, thank you, thank
you!" –Hansi H., psychotherapist
"The philosophical discussions and meditation as well as the work
with the bandhas were the most inspiring aspects of the course for
me, (these practices) truly helped me reconnect with my inner
strength and inner joy and it really stayed with me...my practice
has changed from that point to the present."
–Yolanda B., yoga teacher
"Thank you for guiding us beneath the surface layers. Your presence
alone provides the template for a deep and meaningful experience."
–Nicole R., yoga teacher
"You had mentioned in the beginning that many of us would have
revelations during this course and I did not think I would have been
so fortunate to experience what I did...I have the deepest respect for
you and your teaching." –Dr. Dan B., dentist
"... I realize I just did your Training last year but it completely and
totally changed my practice and my life in so many unexpected
ways...I would like to do it again this year as I suspect it will be a
whole different journey regardless..." –Stefanie R., Project Director
"Teach what is inside you as it applies to the other." – T. Krishnamacharya

Embodying twenty-seven years of living and exploring yoga in its many forms, Maritza brings the gift of Inspiration with a rare wealth of experience to her teaching. Originally from France, she trained and worked professionally as a young actress in Paris, and later in New York, alongside renowned artists before heeding a profound calling in 1981 that sent her on a life-changing journey to India... and subsequently led her to dedicate her life to metaphysical studies.
A modern-day-mystic, truth seeker, rogue adventurer and consummate learner, she has traveled extensively and trained intensively for two decades in Asia, Europe and the US. She was certified in Iyengar Yoga in 1989 and in Anusara Yoga in 2000 while her core practice has remained steadily anchored in Vipassana-body-based meditation since 1981.
Today, Maritza's richly textured and eloquent presentation is rooted in the sound knowledge she acquired from years of masterly yogic studies and discerning psychological inquiry, while deeply reflecting her own artistic soul and intuitive journey of growth, life-healing and transformation into Spirit and Grace.
A teacher's teacher, she has been conducting notorious Advanced Studies in the Bay Area, including a popular 3-month Intensive Training here at the YOGASTUDIO every Fall since 1999. She is the award winning creator of a beautiful home practice best-seller DVD produced by Gaiam.
